“I feel like we’re going to a cosplay,” Kaguya said cheerfully, needle and thread following the stilted movement of her fingers.
C.C. looked at the dark blue material spread all around them and suppressed a wearied sigh. “Tell me again why we are doing this.”
“Even ladies of the court have to learn how to sew and embroider a little,” came the pleasant reply. “In fact, the skill is imperative from what I’ve read. We should not disappoint Zero-sama’s expectations.”
“I don’t think there is much embroidering to do if it’s his outfit you’re trying to make,” C.C. pointed out dryly. “My presence here is pointless. I’m not even participating in this farce.”
“Grand plan,” Kaguya corrected and raised a pair of large, curious eyes from her careful – but sadly poor, C.C. couldn’t help but notice – work. “Why are you so sarcastic toward everything Zero-sama does?”
“It’s in my nature.”
“That will not do at all,” the Sumeragi said disapprovingly and put down the arm piece she was working on, eyes intent on her. “It’s a time of troubles and constant danger. If anything, we ought to support Zero-sama to the best of our ability. I can understand though, if you feel a bit lonely because he has been terribly busy lately.”
C.C. wasn’t sure if she should drop her jaw or just run to the bathroom and take care of the nausea which was quickly rising in her stomach. The level of absurdity of the idea was staggering.
“I’m not sure if you’re looking at this from the right point of view,” she said once the moment of horrible indecision had passed.
“Oh, you don’t have to worry about me,” Kaguya said, still with the same cheerful fashion that for some reasons failed to grate on her nerves. “Like I said, I don’t mind the presence of a few concubines if it is what Zero-sama wishes. In fact, I think we should be good friends for his sake.”
Whether it was for his sake or not, C.C. decided to move the subject to a safer route. “How many more of these do we have to make?” she asked, waving a careless hand toward the half-finished business around them.
“Just enough for the top people.” Kaguya returned to her vigorous sewing. “It’s admirable, how he can think of such a plan to answer to the new Governor-General’s tactics.”
C.C. didn’t bother to correct her. “One can win against a few select people every time or against everyone a few times,” she murmured, “but not against everyone every time.”
“You have no faith in our lord,” Kaguya reproached. The older woman felt her eyebrow twitch at the suggestion that Lelouch was her lord.
“Many have tried,” she replied, and for once the depth of her age was reflected in her timbre. All those great men she had come across in the course of her unfading life, and how pride and overconfidence had always been the mother of their downfall. One by one, inevitably.
“There is always a first to everything,” Kaguya said, all faith and naivety paraded without the slightest bit of shame. C.C. only stared at her as she held up her costume and sighed. “I wish I could add something. It’s so… black. And much too plain for my taste.”
For some reasons, she suddenly wanted to laugh.
“You can always add a ribbon,” she intoned dryly. “Or a few laces.”
“Zero-sama does not wear laces or ribbons,” Kaguya answered firmly. “Those things are for us, his ladies.”
C.C.’s eyebrow twitched again, but she didn’t say anything.
It would be useless anyway.
To rkold: I’m really sorry. I just couldn’t write them as a real pairing without resorting to something horribly OOC. But I hope this answers your question about who tops between them XD
